Colorado – Upside down and right side up

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

We were two of five or ten photographers out for a 5 am photo shoot of Maroon Bells a few weeks ago. Its a little disenchanting to see five professional photographers at a spot in the morning, but better than the hundred who show up once the aspens start changing.

This is the same picture right side up and upside down. The reflection that morning was great!

Colorado – America’s most dangerous highway revisited

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

This year we went back to drive the Million Dollar Highway, and I must say that it was no less stunning the second time around.  We drove through the pass during the morning and the views were stunning.  If there is one place in Colorado that I would like to live during the summer time it would definitely be Ouray. It sits on the northern side of the million dollar highway and is considered the Switzerland of America.  I have never experienced  a more beautiful place.

Colorado – Eagle on the Cross

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

These two shots were taken by my friend Andrew Hoza.  He was traveling from Gypsum to Eagle, Colorado when he saw a Bald Eagle sitting on a mountaintop cross.

It would be easy for an American to take this occurrence as a jingoistic omen.  I don’t see it that way at all, but instead as God’s majesty of nature and his sacrifice.  Making it all the more beautiful.

Colorado – Ode to Calvin and Hobbs

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Ever since I was a little kid I’ve wanted to do this, and Colorado’s (hopefully) last snowstorm of the year afforded me the opportunity.

Colorado – The two-tone morning glow

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

After a recent snow storm I was driving to work and noticed that Mount Evans was looking beautiful in the distance.  I pulled out my camera, took this shot, and didn’t crash my car.  Hopefully, this photo will inspire Dilly to come visit Colorado some day.

I’m leaving in two days for a trip to Asia,  I’m very excited and very blessed.  I will start posting as soon as I get back!

Colorado – Where rocks burst out of the ground

Monday, October 26th, 2009

null

Rock formations of conglomerate sandstone can be found all along the front range of Colorado.  From the Garden of the Gods, to Roxborough, to Red Rocks, to the Flat Irons of Boulder, erosion has exposed these bursting fountains of stone over the last few thousand years.  These shots from Roxborough state park are just one small reason why Colorado is the most beautiful state in the Union.

Colorado – The kind of place that doesn’t exist… on Wikipedia.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Fulford, Colorado, population 2, is the kind of place that doesn’t even exist on Wikipedia.  I went up to Fulford this weekend with some of my friends.  After eight miles of bumpy unpaved roads I found myself in Colorado heaven.  Fulford is mostly used as a spot for summer homes but was once a bustling mining town.

We even spotted a genuine mountain man (pictured above).  We walked up to a (his?) cave and he ran out, pointed at us and then pointed down the cliff.   So we left and enjoyed the rest of Folford.

Colorado – The Majestic Million Dollar Highway

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

The Million Dollar Highway in Colorado stretching from Ouray to Silverton is fabled as the most dangerous highway in the United States.  I took this fact as a challenge as I was traveling around Colorado with a friend of mine.  I was warned by many not to drive south on the Million Dollar highway, US 550, because the southbound lane is more often than not on the cliff side of the road.  With very few guardrails the southbound side of the highway often stops at the painted white line and then falls hundreds of feet.

One does not simply drive into Mordor…..errrr I mean the Million Dollar Highway, but we made it out alive, and we both agreed that it was our favorite part of the tour around Colorado.

US 550 is the kind of place where the only thing blocking your view of mountains is other mountains.  It has some of the most beautiful untouched nature in the lower 48, and is well worth the risk, at least in the summer.

Colorado – An amusement park fit for Scooby Doo

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Year after year for the past 100 years Lakeside Amusement park in Denver has rapidly declined.  Many of the rides don’t work and those that do are covered in grafitti.  It has been the home of multiple suicides and murders over the years.  Nonetheless, it retains a certain charm similair to that of the amusement parks in Scoob Doo.  To put it bluntly, it’s not the type of place you want to be after dark, which is the only time it’s open.

Colorado – Disappearing sheep

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Two of my buddies and I were driving over Battle Mountain pass to get from Vail to Leadville so we could climb Mount Elbert.  After we drove over the treacherous pass we spotted a large expanse filled with tens of thousands of sheep.  The strangest thing was that the next day when we came back through all of the sheep were gone.
